Staying Safe from AI Voice Scams

Scams are getting more sophisticated... and a little scary.

One of the latest scams involves the use of AI-generated voices that sound just like someone you know. A scammer may call pretending to be your grandchild, child, or sibling, claiming there’s been an emergency and they need money right away.

These calls often feel very real, and they’re designed to create panic and urgency so you act before thinking.

A Personal Story

This type of scam has, sadly, been around for some time. Twenty years ago, when I was off at college, my grandmother received a phone call from someone claiming to be from a detective’s office. The caller said I was in their custody and in trouble with the law. They told her I needed bail money to be released. Then another person got on the line, impersonating my voice, saying, "I'm scared and just wanted to go home." They also insisted she not tell Mom or Dad and urged her to transfer the money right away.

In the end, my grandma gave them $10,000 before calling my mother to ask if she had heard from me and if I was okay. My mom, now panicked, called me immediately to find out where I was. I was completely confused. I was sitting on the couch watching a movie with some friends.

We learned the hard way, as a family, how to deal with these scams.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Family

First, it’s a good idea to create a simple family password or code phrase that only your loved ones know. If someone calls claiming to be in trouble, they should be able to say the password to confirm their identity.

If you ever receive a call like this, don’t respond right away. Hang up and call the person directly using a phone number you already trust. Keep in mind that caller ID can be faked, so don’t rely on it to confirm who’s calling. And finally, never send money or give out personal information unless you’re absolutely sure the situation is real.
